Wanda Jackson & Paul McCartney: Elvis Celebration/ Rockabilly N Blues Radio Hour 07-10-17

We play a couple of interview segments from Wanda Jackson and Paul McCartney about Elvis.  Wanda's comes from her I Remember Elvis project.  Her husband and manager Wendell Goodman sadly passed away recently on May 21, 2017.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to Wanda and her family.

Paul's segment comes from a promo disc that came with Run Devil Run.  We'll hear Elvis covers from both of those projects as well as we continue our Elvis Celebration and remember his music 40 years after his passing.  We also hear NEW tunes from John Lindberg Trio, Celine Lee, Truly Lover Trio, Los Kingdom and rockers from Garry Tallent, The Cochran Brothers, Sonny Burgess, the return of the instru-Mental Breakdown with tunes from Charlie Gracie and Junior Brown and lots more packed into this can't-miss hour!!

Happy Birthday Paul McCartney!

Happy Birthday Paul McCartney!  He was born in Liverpool, England in 1942 to James and Mary McCartney.  His impact on music is nearly impossible to measure from his work with The Beatles, Wings and his solo recordings.  Guinness World Records describes Paul as "The Most Successful Composer And Recording Artist Of All Time" with 60 Gold Discs and 100 million albums, 100 million singles and a writers credit on 43 songs that have sold over one million copies each!

14 year old George Harrison joins The Quarrymen in 1958

Just a little under 3 weeks shy of his 15th birthday, George Harrison joined The Quarrymen.  He was first friends with Paul McCartney who then introduced him to John Lennon.  It was Harrison's guitar playing (particularly his skill at playing the song "Raunchy" note for note) that won over Lennon.  Here's one of the songs they recorded as The Quarrymen- "In Spite Of All The Danger", written by George and Paul.

Eddie Cochran was born this day in 1938

Eddie Cochran was born this day in 1938 in Albert Lea, MN.  He was tragically killed in a car accident in England at the young age of 21.  His music legacy will continue to live on though.  "Summertime Blues", "Twenty Flight Rock", "Somethin' Else", "C'mon Everybody" and so many more hold a firm place in the foundation of Rock & Roll.  Here's some of his classics along with covers by others as well...

Paul McCartney plays a return gig at The Cavern in 1999

This day in 1999, Paul McCartney returns to The Cavern after 36 years for a special live performance.  McCartney focused on tunes from his recently released Run Devil Run but also threw in some gems like "Twenty Flight Rock" and "I Saw Her Standing There".  Those 2 took him back to his days with The Beatles playing there over 3 decades before.  His band also featured Pink Floyd's David Gilmour and Deep Purple's Ian Paice.  There were roughly 300 packed in the Cavern but it was also broadcast on the internet as well as released on DVD later.  Enjoy some video footage from that historic night here...

Remembering George Harrison

George Harrison passed away this day in 2001.  The "quiet Beatle" will long be remembered for his great contributions both solo and with The Beatles.  In addition to the great songs he wrote, his guitar playing has long been studied.  Harrison joined The Quarrymen after Paul McCartney told John Lennon about a friend of his named George that could play the hit instrumental "Raunchy" note for note.  Here's a look back at his stellar career:

Paul McCartney taped MTV's Unplugged this day in 1991

Paul McCartney taped an episode of MTV's hugely popular "Unplugged" show.  While other artists plugged in their acoustic instruments into amplifiers, Paul and his band were 100% unplugged with mics strategically placed near guitars, piano, etc. to pick up the sound.  A recording of most of the songs appeared on an album in the summer of '91.  "Midnight Special", "Mean Woman Blues" and "Matchbox" were among the songs that did not make the final album.  Some of the songs that did make the album include "Be-Bop-A-Lula", "Here, There and Everywhere", "Blue Moon Of Kentucky", "We Can Work It Out", "Blackbird", "Hi-Heel Sneakers", "Good Rockin' Tonight", "I've Just Seen A Face", "And I Love Her" and 8 more.  Here's some select songs from the evening:

Elvis Presley records "All Shook Up" this day in 1957

Elvis Presley recorded "All Shook Up" this day in 1957 at Radio Recorders in Hollywood.  It hit the top of the charts and stayed there for 8 weeks.  It also became his first UK #1 and stayed there for 7 weeks.  Here's Presley's version along with select covers by Paul McCartney and

"Free As A Bird", released this day in 1995, was the first new Beatles song in 25 years

"Free As A Bird" debuts on a 6 hour ABC documentary this day in 1995.  The song appears on The Beatles Anthology Volume 1 and the album quickly shoots up the charts to #1.  The song originally was a John Lennon demo that Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr added vocals and instrumentation to the track.  Jeff Lynne produced the single.  Enjoy the music video as well as the "making of"...
